Update: 21st June 2018. The Ecuadorian Embassy in Abuja categorically refutes the claim of moves to sign a visa-free agreement with Nigeria. No details were provided on the validity of the previous information we received.

After over a decade of serving Nigerian Passport Holders as a restricted category for visa applications, Ecuador agreed to sign a visa-free pact with Nigeria to strengthen co-operation and bilateral relations.

The Ecuadorian Ambassador to Nigeria, Amb. Deopoldo Rovayo, announced on June 20th 2018 during a courtesy visit to Nigeria's Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Olukunle Bamgbose. The two sides recognized the need to promote bilateral trade and people to people exchange. There are currently over 1,600 Nigerians residing in Ecquador, most of whom are students and teachers. That number is expected to grow with the increased opportunities for co-operation in the agricultural sector and other industries.

It is unknown when the deal will be signed and finalized but the news comes as a step in the right direction as many Nigerians had expressed difficulties obtaining visas to carry out their commitments in the country
