The Subject to Regularisation (STR) visa is recommended to foreigners taking up full employment in Nigeria. According to Section 8 and Section 33 of the Nigeria Immigration Act, the private sector employer of a non-Nigerian worker must confirm vacancy on expatriate quota, through written request to the Comptroller-General of Immigration (CGI). Click here for details of this procedure.
In the Nigeria Visa Policy (NVP) 2020, the STR is no longer an excusive visa class but most visas in the Temporary Residence Visas (TRVs) category, including study visas, are Subject to Regularisation. Perculiar to the specific visa class, the STR-related visas are obtainable only through approved Visa Channels : the Nigeria Consular Missions or Visa Application Centers.
The STR-related visas are recommended for Expatriates and their dependants, Technical officials of Diplomatic Missions in Nigeria, Foreign Students, Research Fellows, Clerics and their dependants, Expatriate Staff of NGOs/INGOs and their dependants, Expatriate Government Officials (GOs) and their dependants, Free Zone Expatriates and their dependants, or other highly skilled foreign workers or students who have long-term engagement or renewable contracts in Nigeria. These residence permits are available to most passport holders who fullfil the requirements.
