CGJHB/AD/II VOL II | Added on 18 January, 2022

ADVISORY

The Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg is aware of threats of attacks on foreigners by members of the Patriotic Alliance Party as indicated in the hastag #PutSouthAfricansFirst from 9th to 21st January 2022. Of particular note is a voice note trending on social media that foreigners would be chased out of the country with effect from 19th January 2022. Videos purporting attacks on some individuals are also in circulation.

The Consulate urges members of the Nigerian Community to remain calm and law abiding as they go about their legitimate businesses. Members of the community are advised to be alert and extra vigilant in their immediate environment and to avoid volatile areas that are suseptible to violence as much as possible. Shop owners should reinforce the security of their premises and safeguard them within the limits permitted by law.

The Mission is confident that the relevant security agencies will live up to their responsibilities of maintaining law and order, as well as, protecting the lives and properties of all law abiding residents in the country.
